Killiney Hill Park: Best Panoramic Views Over Dublin Bay

Ever Prel standing on the edge of a cliff on Killiney Hill looking out over Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea

If you’re looking for a peaceful walk with stunning views near Dublin, Killiney Hill Park is the place to go. This small park, opened to the public in 1887 and once called Victoria Hill, offers sweeping views over Dublin Bay, the city of Dublin, and the charming villages of Dalkey and Killiney. From quiet woodland paths to ancient stone monuments, Killiney Hill Walk is perfect for those looking for a mix of history, nature, and breathtaking panoramas. To help you make the most of your visit, I’ll walk you through my favourite spots on Killiney Hill — including the best place I found in County Dublin to watch the sunrise.

Things to See on Killiney Hill

The Pyramid of Dublin

The Pyramid of Dublin is a 3-metre high stone structure built in 1852. I recommend going to Killiney Hill early in the morning, climbing the steps of the pyramid and standing on top. As the sun rises, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a vast expanse of water and land stretching out in all directions. From this viewpoint, you can see Dalkey Island with its Martello tower, the Irish Sea, and, if the weather allows, the distant mountains of Wales.

The Obelisk

Built in 1742 during a time of poverty and suffering, this cone-shaped obelisk was constructed as a way to provide employment to the poor. Now a symbol of solidarity and resilience, it marks the summit of Killiney Hill. You might notice a small balcony near the top — probably a great place to enjoy the view over Dublin and the Irish Sea, although I wouldn’t know as it cannot be accessed. Instead, I recommend sitting on one of the many benches around the obelisk and taking this magnificent view in.

The Woods

The woods cover most of Killiney Hill Park and are filled with Scots Pine and Larch trees. This is a great place to spot red squirrels, an iconic and protected species of Ireland. There are many trails to choose from, some of them offering stunning views over the sea, making it my favourite place to go for a walk in County Dublin. This peaceful place always remind me of Formby Woods in Merseyside, England, a place I would definitely recommend visiting if you like sea-side nature walks (check out my guide here).

Dalkey Quarry

A perfect picnic spot, the Dalkey Quarry is popular among tourists and locals alike for its secluded spots on the crags where you can enjoy breathtaking views over Dublin City. The area is safe as long as you stay on the path and away from the cliff edge. The rugged cliffs are also popular among climbers. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to enjoy dramatic landscapes, Dalkey Quarry is definitely worth a visit.

Sea View Mansions

Vico Road, just outside Killiney Hill Park, is lined with big, beautiful mansions belonging to some of Dublin’s richest residents. From big castle-like houses to large modern mansions with glass walls, colourful cottages and classic Georgian homes, this street is perfect for admiring a wide range of architectural masterpieces.
