The Best Scouse In Liverpool (Top 5 Pubs & Restaurants)

A hearty serving of traditional Scouse stew served inside a crispy Yorkshire pudding, garnished with fresh herbs, in a cosy Liverpool pub.

Have you ever eaten a meal so good they named a whole city after it? Well, in Liverpool, they kind of did! Scouse is a rich, slow-cooked stew made with tender lamb or beef, potatoes, carrots and onions. It’s the city’s most iconic dish and a must-try if you’re visiting. During my last trips, I roamed the city in search of the top five spots serving the best scouse in Liverpool so you can finally enjoy this Liverpudlian delicacy. And if you’re vegetarian, don’t worry — I’ve got you covered so everyone can participate in the Scouse Hunt!

A Short History of Scouse

The origins of scouse date back to the 18th, when Liverpool was a busy port city attracting sailors from across Europe. The dish evolved from ‘lobscouse,’ a stew commonly eaten by sailors, and soon became a popular meal among Liverpool’s working-class residents. Over time, the name ‘lobscouse’ was shortened to ‘scouse,’ a term that now refers to both to the dish and to the people of Liverpool. Today, scouse remains an important part of local culture and is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike — so much so that every year on February 28th, Global Scouse Day is celebrated both in Liverpool and around the world to celebrate this iconic stew and its heritage.
