Exploring Formby Beach: From Pine Woods to Sand Dunes

A young girl named Ever Prel standing on top of a sand dune at Formby Beach, Liverpool, looking out at the Irish Sea on a sunny day.

Formby is one of the UK’s hidden gems, a place where everything slows down and feels a little more peaceful. Located on the Merseyside coast, Formby Beach is home to golden sand dunes and ancient pine woods. Managed by the National Trust, this beautiful area is carefully preserved for everyone to enjoy. It’s not just the stunning landscape and unique wildlife that make Formby special, but the overwhelming sense of calm you feel when you’re there. Sitting on top of one of those towering dunes, as the wind rushes by and the sea stretches endlessly before you, it’s impossible not to feel like you’re on top of the world, like Jack in Titanic shouting “I’m the king of the world!”

Formby Woods

Home to Red Squirrels and Towering Pines

Formby Woods feels like stepping into a quiet, green world where the air smells of pine and everything slows down. It’s made up of tall pine trees and soft, sandy paths that twist and turn through the forest. Walking here feels a bit like being in a maze; there are lots of different paths, but most of them eventually lead to the big sand dunes. It’s a place that suits almost everyone: dog walkers, families, runners, or anyone just looking for a peaceful stroll. On sunny days, the light shines beautifully through the trees.

Formby is the perfect place for nature and wildlife lovers. One of the nicest things about Formby Woods is that it’s one of the few places in the UK where you can still see red squirrels. If you walk quietly and look carefully, you might spot one moving through the trees or sitting on a branch. Their small size and reddish fur make them stand out, especially compared to the more common grey squirrels. If you need to take a break, there are benches along the way, which is perfect for sitting and observing squirrels or just enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

And then there’s the legend of the Forest Fairy of Freshfield, a mystical creature that haunts the woods. Some say you feel them before you see them: like a chill in the air or a rustling in the trees when no one else is around. Others believe the fairy wears a pink backpack and moves quickly through the shadows, always just out of reach. As easily as they can be found, they slip away, leaving only the feeling that something magical was there, and now it’s gone. It’s a reminder that the people who light up our lives can fade into the background, like a ghost in the forest, leaving only memories behind.

Formby Beach

A Quiet Escape on the Merseyside Coast

Formby Beach is my happy place, a spot where I can truly disconnect from everything. The sand dunes rise up, offering an incredible view of the golden beach and endless Irish Sea. The waves crash gently against the soft sand, creating a rhythm that’s both calming and energising. It almost feels like you’re flying, especially when the wind blows across the dunes, making you feel light and free. Whether it’s sunny or overcast, the open space allows you to take a deep breath and forget about everything for a little while.

It’s the perfect place to go when you’re feeling overwhelmed. I just love to sit on one of the tallest dunes with a sausage roll from Greggs and a warm cuppa. There’s something magical about it: sitting there, watching the waves crash against the shore and letting the world slow down around you. The quiet of the beach, combined with the cosiness of the food and tea, has a way of making me feel like everything is going to be okay, reminding me that sometimes the best thing I can do is just be still and breathe.
